What's a martingale?
Not long ago we started offering an option that any Get Wagging collar can come as a
martingale collar, and the response has been great! We do get a lot of questions about what a martingale collar is, so below is some information for you.
A martingale collar looks like a normal collar, but it has an added loop of fabric with a d-ring on
it where you’ll attach your leash. When your dog is relaxed and walking properly on the leash
the fabric loop will be relaxed, too. When your dog pulls so does the fabric loop, which will then
tighten the collar a little around your dog’s neck. It’s a great tool for training or simply for dogs
who are known leash pullers. My dog is notorious for slipping out of a normal collar to chase a
squirrel (or whatever’s caught his attention, he’s got major talent in the collar sipping
department!) so this is a great option for him. It was first invented to use on sight hounds
because their necks are larger than their heads and they’d often slip out of a traditional collar.
It’s much safer than a slip lead and people find it to be a better option than a traditional choke
collar.
It’s always important to make sure your dog’s collar is properly fitted, but more so with a
martingale collar. If it’s ill-fitting it won’t work properly and you won’t see the best results
because of this. Please see our sizing chart to find the right size martingale collar for your pet. If you have a question about how to measure your dog for a martingale collar, or any other questions about martingale collars, email us and we’ll be happy to help!
